Located at a distance of 23 kilometers south of New Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is the main airport of the capital of India. At present the Indira Gandhi International Airport is one of the main domestic and international gateways of the country that keeps New Delhi linked with other parts of India and the world. The airport was named after Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India and the daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Previously the Indira Gandhi International Airport was known as the Palam Airport, but now Palam has become a part of it and provides domestic service. There are two terminals in the IGI airport and terminal is used for domestic operations. The new terminal or terminal 2 became functional on May 2, 1986.

At present the IGI airport has a total annual capacity of 12.5 million persons. The IGI Airport has got two busy non-parallel runways and one auxiliary runway. On March, 2006, IGI became the first airport of the country to operate two runways simultaneously. It happened with the landing of a SpiceJet aircraft and take-off of a jet Airways aircraft at the same time. Runway 10/28, the main runway of the airport is the only one in India equipped with CAT III-B instrument landing system. Large number of domestic airlines takes advantage of this landing system while training their pilots.
At present the international terminal of IGI Airport (terminal 2) is serving 35 international airlines with aircrafts flying in different destinations at regular intervals. The airport is also the hub of several domestic and international airlines. The names of some of those are given below:
