The tomb was started in 1562 following the orders of Hamida Banu Begum, the widow of Humayun. Sayyed Muhammad ibn Mirak Ghiyathuddin and his father Mirak Ghiyathuddin the architects of the edifice were brought all the way from Herat. It took eight long years to build the tomb that stands as an important milestone in the history of Mughal art and architecture. The chahr Bagh Garden Style incorporated in the design of the tomb was first of its type in India. Built with red sandstone the structure also offers glimpse of white and marble to get rid of the monotony.
