India Gate is located on the Rajpath in New Delhi, (originally called the All India War Memorial) a monument built by Edwin Lutyens to memorialize the Indian soldiers who died in the World War I and the Afghan Wars. Duke of Connaught laid the foundation stone on 10 February 1921.
The names of the soldiers who died in these wars are enciphered on the walls. The building was completed in 1931. Since 1971 the Amar Jawan Jyoti (The flame of the immortal warrior) is burning under it which marks the Unknown Soldier's Tomb.

Details:
On top of India Gate in capital letters these following lines are inscribed:
“To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honored in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan War.”
The enshrine is a black marble cenotaph with a rifle placed on its barrel, tufted by a soldier's helmet. Every face of the cenotaph has inscription in gold the words "Amar Jawan" (Immortal Warrior). This memorial is placed on a building which has four flames on its four corners that are constantly kept alive.
Features:
The cenotaph is 42 meters tall and is situated in such a way that many important roads disperse from it. Traffic passing around India Gate used to be regular till the roads were shut to the public due to terrorist threats. The lawns around Rajpath are packed with people during the night, when the India Gate is illuminated. From the base of the arch visitors get a good view of Rashtrapati Bhawan. The entire cenotaph is very beautiful and the arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone which rises in stages to a huge clay sculpture.
Atmosphere:
The whole boulevard up to the cenotaph is lined with cars, scooters and motorcycles. Really, whole of Delhi seems to meet at the green lawns of India Gate. The air is filled up with chatter, laughter and the cries of marketers peddling their goods. People can munch on anything from fruit salad to bhelpuri and potato chips and all different kinds of snacks available in the city.
