And when you are on a trip to Delhi how can you stay away from the Jantar Mantar, which is one of the rare archeological wonders of India? The archeological wonder of India called Jantar Mantar was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II during the period of 1726 to 1734. Jai Singh II had built 4 other observatories which are located presently at Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain, and at Mathura.

In the year of 1948 the Jantar Mantar was declared as a national monument and prior to its being declared as a national monument it restored thoroughly restored in the year of 1901. As G. E. Kidder Smith had once said “An excursion through Jai Singh’s Jantar is the singular one of walking through solid geometry and encountering a collective weapons system designed to probe the heavens.” This phrase very aptly describes the architectural nicety of the Jantar Mantar. The small domed shaped cupola which is situated on top of the Jantar Mantar and is also referred to by the name of Hindu Chhatri is used as a platform from where the arrival of the monsoon season and the eclipses can be announced. The observatory of Jantar Mantar consists of fourteen major devices which are abstract to look at and are designed geometrically for carrying out different functions such as tracking the stars in their respective orbits, time measurement, predicting eclipses, ascertaining the planets’ declinations, determining the celestial altitudes and their related ephemeredes. The Jantar Mantar is situated near Connaught place which is the commercial hub of Delhi. The movement of the sun, moon and the planets in the solar system could be followed from this archeological wonder built by Jai Singh II called Jantar Mantar. The Jantar Mantar is dominated by the presence of “Samrat Yantra” or “Prince of Dials” and it functions as an instrument meant for measuring time accurately. The Jantar Mantar is pronounced as “Yantar Mantra” where Yantra stands for instrument and mantra stands for formula.
