Rajghat

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in the Indian independence movement. The major political and spiritual leader of the nation is regarded as the “Father of the Nation”. Raj Ghat was built in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi to mark the place where his cremation was performed on 31st January 1948. Our site cheapflightstonewdelhi offers detailed information about Rajghat.

Ideally situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, Rajghat is a major tourist attraction of the city. The simple black marble platform was built in memory of the man who devoted his entire life for the cause of Indian independence. At one end of the platform an eternal flame burns perpetually to pay respect to the man who breathed his last for the cause of the nation. The stone footpath adorned by lawns makes way for the visitors to reach the memorial nestled at the walled enclosure. The two museums dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi offers the visitors a glimpse of his works and life. The last words of Gandhiji “He Ram” can be found inscribed on the memorial. It has become a tradition for the foreign delegates visiting India to pay their homage to Mahatma Gandhi by laying flowers on the platform of Rajghat.

Visitors are requested to remove their shoes before entering the Rajghat as a sign of respect. Every Friday a commemorative ceremony is organized to mark the day of his death. On every birth and death anniversaries of Gandhiji prayer sessions are arranged and are presided over by important personalities along with the common mass. Cremation spots of several other famous leaders are located in the vicinity of Rajghat. Sydney Percy-Lancaster was the person behind the landscaping and planting of the memorials. The samadhi of Jawaharlal Nehru lies to the north of Rajghat and is known as the Shantivan.
